How To Prepare for GMAT | Tips To Prepare

Posted By laxmi On 9:09 AM 3 comments
What's GMAT?

It is a normal aptitude test like any other. Just because you do well than your neighbor does not make you smarter, and vice versa. You do not need a 780 on GMAT. What I normally hear is 700 is a good score as far as MBA schools are concerned. After that, they will start looking at how well-rounded your overall application package is, rather than how much over 700 you managed to get

How To prepare for GMAT?

1. First, scan through the Princeton Review book to get an idea of the test and what it really 'tests'. Try some of their question bins.

2. Register at mba.com and download the 2 free Powerprep tests they offer. Take one of them. These are much easier than the real thing, but would give you a good idea of where you stand. For example, a score of 680-700 should tell you that you can manage 730+ in the real GMAT if you give yourself 2 months. You can take the second test maybe a month later to boost your confidence.

3. Start on the Official Guide (or OG as it is known in GMAT speak!). My strategy was to divide up the questions so I could simulate the actual test everytime. So I would take 15 questions from each verbal section (3 x 15 = 45) and 20 questions from the two Quant sections (2 x 20 = 40) and take them without too many breaks. You could start timing yourself as well.

4. Maintain an excel spreadsheet (or a 4 squire notebook for the technologically challenged) to keep tabs on your performance in each section. I tracked things like my success percentage, average time taken per question etc. and I also noted down the questions I got wrong or had the most difficulty with. Revisiting them later helped me gauge my improvement. The 900 odd questons in the OG main book should take you around 10-12 days at this rate.

5. Now you can move on to the Kaplan book and go through their strategy, tips and practice questions. You can also simultaneously start working on the OG Verbal and Quant supplementary books.

6. You can start taking tests whenever you are comfortable. Apart from the 8 tests in the Princeton and Kaplan CDs, I also bought the 9 real GMAT tests available at mba.com. They tend to repeat some OG questions, but I found them to be good practice. There are also couple of GMATPrep tests by Pearson VUE you are free to download from gmat.com. These are supposedly the closest approximations of the actual test, so you should keep them for the last week. As you can see, there are around 20 tests already listed here. Going at an inhuman rate of about one test every alternate day, you will need 40 days just to complete these tests. So the earlier you start with them the better.

7. The week before the test, take the 2 GMATPrep tests as mentioned earlier. You will probably end up with a similar score in the actual test unless you screw up real bad.

8. Somewhere along the way, you also need to prepare for the 2 AWA sections. I read some sample essays given in each of the books listed earlier, and started typing away on notepad. It helps to write the essay sections as well for the last 4-5 tests, just to improve your stamina and longevity.

Timeline To Prepare for GMAT:

The tricky part is when to schedule the test and how long do you need to prepare. If you can consistently manage 2 hours a day, then 2 months should be more than enough time to get a 700+ score. Ofcourse, I cannot generalize here, and people have different aptitudes for different things. So work it out for yourself. But one month into your prep, you should probably book your test date, so you cannot back out or procrastinate.

Tell Me Something About Yourself , JOB INTERVIEW question

Posted By laxmi On 6:01 AM 1 comments
Here let us discuss the most important question of the decade “Tell me something about yourself

For this each one of you spend some time idle analyse about what to say and has to frame up with your own answer. You just sit down quietly and think about yourself and write it down in a notebook because only you can best deliver about yourself once you start think about you. However here are some guidelines to do the analysis:
>> 1. The answer should not be too long or too short. The ideal length would be around 1 to 1.5 minutes. (If you are not cut in between)
>> 2. Maintain a sense of time. Go in a chronological order.
>> 3. Mention the names of your school and college with pride and confidence.
>> 4. Don't give too long a description about your family. Concentrate on yourself.
>> 5. Decide what is your strong point. It could be academics or extracurricular activities or a special skill or a national/ international level achievement. While mentioning any of these, emphasize on what you learnt and what you intend to display by mentioning this achievement.
eg: I was the Vice chairman of a cultural club in my college.Say this as, "I have been involved in organization and publicity of numerous events as the Vice chairman of a cultural club during graduation."
>> 6. If they stop you in between, stop. Do not try to complete.
>> 7. If you have finished your answer and they do not move on, wait for a second, smile and politely ask, "anything specific you wish to know about me?"
>> 8. Maintain a track of what you have filled in your application form. It must be in sync with what you speak.
>> 9. I would advise not to mention specifically, your long term ambitions while answering this question unless you are absolutely sure you will be able to answer any related questions. Remember you are there to prove your candidature as a student, not as a businessman.
>> 10. Lastly, if they do not ask you this question, be sure that you try your best to divert the interview towards your strengths.

How To Face & Prepare For An Interview

Posted By laxmi On 5:59 AM 1 comments

An interview can be defined as a face to face oral communication between the interviewer and the interviewee in order to assess the views, attitudes and ideas of the interviewee. However the interview process also enables the interviewee and observers to assess the skill and ability of the interviewer. Thus, an interview is a test of both the communicants and parties engaged in the interaction. Intelligence, knowledge, personal qualities and character are revealed and both parties are required to be well prepared. The process allows everyone involved to make some important decisions. The candidate decides whether he should accept the position and the interviewer decides whether the candidate should be appointed; this decision may affect the organizational interests.Kepp the following suggestions in your mind when you are about to face an interview:

Dress appropriately - A well dressed and groomed appearance can do wonders for that first impression. Now is not exactly the time to make a fashion statement so a tastefully chosen professional outfit, with suitable accessories like a hand-bag or brief case should be fine.

Posture and Carriage - The way in which the candidate carries himself while walking and sitting tells the interviewer about your confidence. Good "carriage" and posture have to be developed over a period of time and are essential in distinguishing a shoddy and careless attitude from a sharp and alert one.

Be Self Confident - Self confidence, or the lack of it, is observed through your behavior, right from the way you sit to how you speak. Good manners and proper behavior are obviously necessary. Suitable greetings for the time of the day and other formalities must be known to the interviewee; for example, sit down only after being told to; elbows must not be put on the table; the brief case or bag should be kept on the floor beside the chair and do not play with any of your accessories or clothes. Nervous movements betray show a lack of confidence and concentration.

Mental Preparation - The candidate should be well informed about current events, domestic and international, and topics of general interest. Regular reading of newspapers, listening to radio and TV discussions, participating in group discussions and general reading habits are helpful activities in developing the required mental status for an interview.

Information about the organization, its directors, turnover, share capital and other relevant information which are available in its annual report, is expected of candidates by public limited companies. A candidate must know as much as possible about the prospective employer company.

No Guessing Replies - In situations where the candidate does not know the answer to a question it is always better to state ones inability to answer than to make a guess. No one is expected to know everything; admitting that one does not know the answer reflects honesty.

Be clear and Answer with clarity - A candidate must have clarity of purpose and determination enough to want to know his prospects in the organization. He/she must be able to ask questions about the nature of duties, employee benefits, future prospects and other things which he may want to know about the organization before taking any decision.

Know your own worth - It is advisable to talk about salary without appearing to be bargaining and without being driven or defeated. This requires careful prior thinking; if possible this topic should be discussed with the family and with experienced elders or friends. It is useful to assess ones training, experience, proved ability, as well as needs, in order to quantify ones worth. It is, of course, necessary to know the payments made for similar positions or work in other companies.

Go back to the books - The candidate should also possess adequate knowledge in the subjects studied during graduation and professional examinations. A reasonable revision of the subjects can solve the purpose. Several general questions and biographical questions are usually asked by the interviewers and candidates should be well prepared to answer them.

At the end, candidate's are usually not sure when to leave. If the interviewers indicate that the interview is over, collect your bag, wish them and thank them for their friendly attitude and leave. Some candidates, due to nervousness, seem to be in a hurry to leave and forget to wish or thank the interviewers. Always remember that your parting movements are also closely observed so hurried and frantic movements may betray an earlier composed attitude.

To finish your interview with the feel of success each individual must make an honest self-assessment and find out one's areas of strength and weakness. Knowledge of one's deficiencies is useful in overcoming weaknesses and unconscious bad habits of posture or speech can be improved by effort. Shortcomings which cannot be overcome can be accepted and acknowledged so that they do not lead to depression and embarrassment when others notice them. Therefore, coming to terms with oneself and knowing how to deal with one's faults, and how to make the best use of one's knowledge and skills, is another vital element in preparing for an interview.

How To Improve Communication English AND Vocabulary

Posted By laxmi On 4:59 AM 1 comments
Step 1: Read, Read, Read! Most vocabulary words are learned from context. The more words you're exposed to, the better vocabulary you will have. While you read, pay close attention to words you don't know. First, try to figure out their meanings from context. Then look the words up. Read and listen to challenging material so that you'll be exposed to many new words.

Step 2: Improve your context skills. Research shows that the vast majority of words are learned from context. To improve your context skills pay close attention to how words are used. Doing a search on a word using web will give you many examples of how that word is used in context. Play our Daily Context Vocabulary Quiz.

Step 3: Practice, practice, practice. Learning a word won't help very much if you promptly forget it. Research shows that it takes from 10 to 20 repetitions to really make a word part of your vocabulary. It helps to write the word - both the definition and a sentence you make up using the word - perhaps on an index card that can later be reviewed. As soon as you learn a new word, start using it. Review your index cards periodically to see if you have forgotten any of your new words. Also, do a search on a word using web to get many examples of how the word is actually used.

Step 4: Make up as many associations and connections as possible. Say the word aloud to activate your auditory memory. Relate the word to words you already know. For example, the word GARGANTUAN (very large) has a similar meaning to the words gigantic, huge, large, etc. You could make a sequence: small, medium, large, very large, GARGANTUAN. List as many things as you can that could be considered GARGANTUAN: Godzilla, the circus fat lady, the zit on your nose, etc. Create pictures of the word's meaning that involve strong emotions. Think "the GARGANTUAN creature was going to rip me apart and then eat me!"

Step 5: Use mnemonics (memory tricks). For example, consider the word EGREGIOUS (extremely bad). Think EGG REACH US - imagine we've made a mistake so bad that they are throwing eggs at us and a rotten EGG REACHes US. Such funny little word pictures will help you remember what words mean, AND they are fun to make up. Also, find out which learning style suits you best. Everyone learns differently!

Step 6: Get in the habit of looking up words you don't know. If you have a dictionary program on your computer, keep it open and handy. America Online and other internet services have dictionaries and thesauruses on their tool bars. Find them and look up any word you are not absolutely sure of. Use a thesaurus when you write to find the word that fits best.

Step 7: Play with words. Play Scrabble, Boggle, and do crossword puzzles. These and other word games are available for the computer, so you are not dependent on a partner to play. Also, try out the Franklin Electronic Dictionary that features built-in word games.

Step 8: Use vocabulary lists. For the serious vocabulary student, there are many books that focus on the words most commonly found in standardized tests, such as the SAT and GRE. There are also many interesting word sites on the Internet, many of which will send you a word a day by email.

Step 9: Take vocabulary tests. Playing games, such as the ones on this site, that test your knowledge will help you learn new words and also let you know how much progress you're making. Offline sources for vocabulary tests include SAT prep books (we recommend "10 Real SATs" by ETS), and the Reader's Digest Wordpower section. For more, check out Amazon.com or your local bookseller.

Step 10: Get excited about words! Come to appreciate the sometimes- subtle differences between them. Do you know the difference between something that denotes something else and something that connotes something else? If not, go look it up. Learn to say what you really mean and discover the joys of being able to express yourself in writing. Your future can depend on how rich your vocabulary is. A good vocabulary will make a difference on the standardized tests, like the SAT and GRE, that could determine whether or where you go to college. It will also determine the quality of your communication. So be in it for the long pull. Let building your vocabulary be a lifelong proposition. Remember: "In the beginning was the word." Until you have a word for something, it does not exist for you. Name it, and you have made your reality richer.

How To Speak Good English Fluently !! (a different practical method)

Posted By laxmi On 3:44 AM 7 comments

If you think reading this article guides you to speak english then definitely you have landed in a wrong site and even no sites will do that,Normally If you put some efforts in learning Spoken English then for sure you might have tried many spoken English institute who offering you fluent English within one month or two month! I’m not telling that it is impossible because they are offering you fluent English only; you can ask somebody’s name, where he lives, some small conversations etc. The question is what extent you can speak with this short term courses? I am sure most of us cannot speak as fluently as you speak your mother language within this short time. Most of the training center who offers fluent English are exploiting common peoples dream of speaking fluent English.

As everybody saying, To learn writing you have to write, To be a better listener you have to listen everything carefully, Likewise To Learn better speaking you have to speak , If you are writing English for speaking it will not work instead your written English will improve . So in this method we are going to adopt learn by speaking yourself.

You may have listened that while speaking; some people are thinking for a while then speak again thinks then speak. I am not talking about people whose mother language is English. The reason is that they are thinking in their mother tongue and then after it converted in to English this is why their speech gets delaying. What is the solution for it? The only solution is you have to think in English. How can you think in English? This is possible through regular practice this lesson will give you that ability.

General Guidelines:

  1. It is better to close your room doors as you have to practice the lessons loudly.

  2. Spend at least two hours on week days and four hours on Sundays.

  3. To be a better speaker you have to be a better listener first. So whenever you watch TV tries to watch conversational programs and listen conversation in English. I recommend you to watch BBC World. Better you close your eyes and listen the talk and try to understand what they are saying. By watching visuals your 50 % concentration will go there
